Citizenship and Immigration Canada Seeking Settlement Proposals
Citizenship and Immigration Canada is seeking proposals for language training and settlement and resettlement services to help newcomers transition into their new homeland. The call is open to a multitude of groups including non profit organizations, educational businesses, community groups, and other public institutions. CIC is looking to fund new projects for 2013, and the projects may be local, regional, national, or international in scope. This will help with immigrant’s needs, and help them mesh with Canadian society.
According to a report done by CIBC World Markets, Canadian born workers are paid more than Immigrants in Canada, which is inadvertently costing Canada 20 billion dollars in foregone earnings. The difference in pay rates for immigrants to Canadian born workers have decreased from 80 to 60 cents on the dollar, relative to the comparison of those arriving in the 1970s, to today’s wages. The result is caused by the lack of proficiency in English and French, Canada’s official languages. This is also a result of an immigrant being placed in a working position where they may not be matched up correctly with their skills.
As a result, CIC sets aside funding to help garnish these programs may see a positive future with newcomers in Canada, therefore eliminating many problems immigrants face with integrating in Canadian society. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney states, “These services are invaluable in helping immigrants integrate into their new communities.”
