Canada Will Resettle 5,000 Refugees Now in Turkey by 2018
Minister Jason Kenney announced during his visit to Turkey that Canada will welcome up to 5,000 refugees mostly Iraqi and Iranian who are seeking protection in Turkey due to the ongoing violence in the region. Canada is one of the few countries to operate a resettlement program out of Turkey, and only the United States takes more refugees. “Canada has long been a place of refuge for those fleeing persecution, and we are proud to continue this tradition today”, said Minister Jason Kenney. Until now, Canada has welcomed 12,000 Iraqi refugees, mostly from Syria and remains committed to its 2009 and 2010 pledge to resettle up to 20,0o0 Iraqi refugees in need of protection.
Canada has one of the most generous refugee programs in the world and welcomes 1 in 10 refugees worldwide through its program.
