Help for Lac-Mégantic Immigrants and Canadian Passport Holders
With tragedy affecting Lac-Mégantic in Quebec, the Canadian government is eager to help. By offering to restore immigration documents, such as status papers or permanent residency cards, for free, as well as to automatically extend temporary resident status to 5 October 2013, it hopes to leave those affected one less thing to worry about. Applications to replace destroyed documents must be received between 6 July 2013 and 5 October 2013.
Immigrants looking to stay beyond the proffered extension will need to apply with the regular application and fee.
Additionally, Canadian passport holders who were affected by the disaster may also apply for a free replacement by mail or in person at the passport offices, or a designated Service Canada Centre. The replacement application must be received between 26 July 2013 and 5 October 2013.
