Re-launching the Parent and Grandparent Program
The Government plans to bring families together quicker by cutting immigration backlogs and wait times. To accomplish this, the PGP program will re-open for new applications on January 2, 2014 with tighter admission criteria and a cap on applications. Previous, backlogs in the PGP program meant families could wait 8 years or more. With these new criteria and a cap on applications, it will reduce the backlog and improve wait times.
From 2012-2013, Canada has welcomed more than 50,000 parents and grandparents, which is the highest number in nearly a decade.
More information about the changes and how to apply for the new PGP program will be made available at the end of the month, December 31, 2013.
