On February 16, 2012 the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, tabled Bill C-31 which would bring changes to the Balanced Refugee Reform Act, and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. This new legislation is being driven by Citizenship and Immigration Canada so any questions about the Bill should be directed to CIC.

Brian Goodman, Chairperson of Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, believes that some of the proposed changes from this new legislation could raise some concerns over timelines and processes. He reassured people that the IRB has been recognised and served as a model for many other countries, and will continue to meet its obligations in providing a fair process.

Mr. Goodman acknowledged that many people will have questions on the proposed changes and their implications and provided assurances that there will be opportunities to discuss these changes in coming months. In conclusion, he stated that they will continue to develop and test new processes while focusing on reducing the backlog.
